Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds. Some people even begin to visit various local locations to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as we show you the different aspects of this hobby.

The very first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the intelligent way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They are valued much less the farther they are from the natural color.

Stone cut is the second most important factor to look at before buying. The precision of cut determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone. Normally large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye while others need a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Dease Lake, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Eganville, Onttario as well as black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

Emeralds are hard but are sensitive and prey to flaws or inclusions. They
require a lot more care than most other gemstones. The flaws occur through the
trials imposed by nature, and sometimes the engineering process developed by man
. The identification of fissures, however, does serve a useful purpose. The
flaws help to weed out artificial emeralds from the real ones. Inclusions
actually prove an emeralds authenticity. Refraction and density of the stones
vary from the location where they are found. Emeralds are found buried in their
parent rock.

How To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit various locations close by to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this hobby interest you then read along as this article discusses the things you should know to start this hobby.

At the very beginning you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less the farther they are from the natural color.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will never be consistent.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. This means the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to the difference in specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You could try collecting Malachite, Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Zeolite (Thomsonite) for example. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite.

Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby or in some cases other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby then read along as we discuss the various factors in gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the less likely you are to make a mistake. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

Color is a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more valuable the stone becomes. Traditionally, these specter colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Gemstones colors that are darker or paler than a pure spectral color are considered a lower value.

How a stone is cut is the second most important factor to look at. How precise the cut is determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.

Next to look at is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Any large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

The next factors to consider our size and weight. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Chrysoprase, Amethyst (cardinal gem) or Clinohumite for example. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite.

Crystal Quartz is also found in Tanzania. It is found in Morogoro region, Tanga
Region,Kilimanjaro Region, Iringa,Singida Region, Mererani etc. On the surface,
the quartz found in abundance is milky quartz. You have to mine deeper to get
rid of Milky Quartz before you can reach the Clean Crystal Clear Quartz, making
it a highly costly laborious work. It does also depend upon the vein belt. If
the vein belt shows clarity within few metres of digging, you will reach high
grade quality Crystal quartz. The ground is mostly covered with kind of mud type
sand. If you happen to get a good vein, it can reach up to 300 kilometres
underneath the earth.

There are many other common types of treatment to enhance the beauty of colored gemstones. Emeralds are often oiled and waxed to protect them and to hide fine lines that naturally occur in the stone. Some sapphires have their blue color enhanced using diffusion, a chemical process. Certain stones are treated with radiation, again mimicking the processes of nature. All these practices are standard in the jewelry industry; in fact, enhancement is so common that good quality unenhanced stones often come with a certificate stating that fact.

The Reward of Faith Sapphire. This stone was was found in 1975 at the Reward
gemfield near Rubyvale in Queensland, Australia. In 1983 it was cut into the
52.36-carat round you see here, measuring 22.35 mm across and 13.49 mm deep. It
is still owned by its original owner. The stone's color in the photograph is
close to the true color but this does change considerably, to a deeper red,
depending on the nature of the light, although perhaps not strongly enough to be
called a color change sapphire.
