Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first step in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Gemstones colors that are paler or darker than the pure spectral color are considered a lower value.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. A precision cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, diminishes its inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way of determining the excellence of its cut is to check if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting internally. Gem color appears washed out.

Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Normally large flaws are visible to the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often listed according to size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Chrysocolla, Sapphire or Clinohumite and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Just in the United States in Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite

Hints About natural fancy diamonds

Many gemstones will undergo some kind of treatment between the time they are
mined and the time they reach you. These treatments are carried out in order to
improve the appearance of the stone (color or clarity). Treatments include
exposure to very high temperatures, irradiation, heat or irradiation combined
with another chemical (e.g. titanium), oiling, and waxing. Treated gemstones
are not considered less valuable as long as the treatment is considered
permanent by relevant gemological organizations. That means that the
treatment will not wear off with time. In some kinds of gemstones, treatments
are so common that it is nearly impossible to find an untreated one. Rubies are
an example of this. Other gemstones could not exist without treatments, e.g.
Mystic topaz.

Agate is a type of Chalcedony. It is an uncommon stone. Agate is a great ston
to buy if you want "something different". There are several types of agate.
Common ones are: blue lace agate, fire agate, moss agate, tree agate and
petrified wood. One will often see these in agate cabochons or agate beads. I've
seen agate pendants, necklaces and bolo ties that look stunning.
