How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the various gemstones found worldwide today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

The very first step in beginning this hobby the proper way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you can find everything you need to know that will prevent you from making mistakes at the start.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Gemstones at the top of the ladder exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds along with gemstones. A good cut highlights the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent method to determine the precision in its cut is to check how consistently it reflects the light over the stones complete surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. The gemstone without flaws is obviously worth more. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will get a 10X jewelers were gemstone loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt the quartz regions in Yellowdine Lake in Western Australia.

Ultrasonic cleaners clean jewelry using vibration in a cleaning solution to loosen dirt. That vibration can be very harmful to most gemstones. The only gemstones suitable to be put in an ultrasonic cleaner are diamonds, rubies and sapphires. Just think red, white and blue for the ultrasonic cleaner as an easy way to remember the only three gems you can put in that unit.

Historically the volcanic island Zabargad (St. John) in the Red Sea, east of Egypt, was the most important deposit that was exploited for 3500 years. Today's main deposits are in Arizona, China, Vietnam and Pakistan. By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose gemstones or loose diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various areas nearby to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then follow along as we discuss the various factors in gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

The first item to consider should be stone color. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. The spectral colors are blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark precious and semi precious stones are lower.

The cut of the gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut will not reflect the light consistently. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will never look consistent.

The clarity of a gemstone is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is obviously worth more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Serious hobbyists will use a 10X jewelers were gemstone loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each gemstone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can find your raw materials through field trips In the United States in Arkansas you can find Clear & Smoky Quartz, Diamond and Agate. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Mount Ogden, British Columbia or amethyst near Thunder Bay, Ontario as well as Ammolite, a rare gemstone found only in southern Alberta. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

The 1370-carat Neelanjali Star Ruby has been listed in the Guinness Book of
World Records as the largest double star ruby in the world. The enormous star
ruby of Indian origin belongs to the retired lawyer G. Vidyaraj who lives in
Bangalore, India, and claims his descent from the kings of the Vijayanagar
Empire. Vidyaraj inherited the Neelanjali Ruby and the other enormous rubies,
the 3,553-carat Ravirathna Ruby and the 2,475-carat Rajarathna Ruby from his
father, who had inherited them from his ancestors who were direct descendants of
the Vijayanagar royal family. In fact neither Vidyarajs father or his ancestors
would have been aware that they were in possession of such enormously large
rubies, as the large rough stones were actually sacred objects of worship known
as lingams, the symbols of Shiva, called Saligramas. Over the years these
objects of worship were covered with layers of grime and soot, and their bright
red colors concealed. No one would dare touch these objects for fear of
desecration, and the secret of the stones remained hidden for centuries, until
Vidyaraj who was not much inclined towards religion, out of curiosity began to
investigate the nature of the stones, by cleaning them with soap and brush. To
his utter amazement the bright red color of the stones were exposed, which were
subsequently identified as rubies.

Emerald, together with green filtered light, is the gemstone that is said to be
able to heal eczema. Green chrysoberyl, green onyx, and aventurine (green quartz
) can also be good substitutes for emerald. If you suffer from irritated skin,
sapphire can also be used in conjunction with a green gemstone.

Agate is a type of Chalcedony. It is an uncommon stone. Agate is a great ston
to buy if you want "something different". There are several types of agate.
Common ones are: blue lace agate, fire agate, moss agate, tree agate and
petrified wood. One will often see these in agate cabochons or agate beads. I've
seen agate pendants, necklaces and bolo ties that look stunning.
