How To Start Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various neghbourhood locations to look for rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as we show you the things you should know to start this hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the more they move away from the spectral color.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will never be consistent.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the purity of the stone or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This factor comes from the difference of specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite. And if you travel to Canada you will find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec as well as zircons in Sebastopol and Brudnell Townships in Renfew County, Ontario.
