Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect gemstones yourself.
To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand as much as possible about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what you are looking at.
One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Muted gemstone colors or are too dark lowers the value per carat.
Gemstone cut is very important and factors into appraisal of diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut will highlight the gemstone's color, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence of the cut of the stone is to consider how consistently it reflects the light over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.
The clarity in a stone is the next item to consider. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is obviously valued highly. You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference in relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.
